3G Network Shutdown

13/10/2025

From the end of 2025, New Zealand’s 3G mobile networks will be permanently switched off.

We are a managed service provider (msp).

While most of us are already using 4G or 5G devices and won’t notice a thing, the shutdown could quietly impact a surprising number of other devices, especially in homes and businesses.

What Devices Could Be Affected?

While most Kiwis are already using 4G or 5G-compatible smartphones, the 3G shutdown could affect a wide range of other devices, including:

  • Older mobile phones and tablets
  • Medical alarms and health monitoring devices
  • Security systems and building access controls
  • Vehicle tracking systems
  • Business and industrial IoT equipment

If any of your devices rely on 3G for connectivity, they will stop working after the shutdown, including for emergency 111 calls.

How to Check If You’re Affected

To help you prepare, the Telecommunications Forum (TCF) and mobile providers have launched a free tool. For mobile phones, simply text “3G” to 550. You’ll receive a message confirming whether your device is ready for the future or if action is needed.

To check for the other devices, it’s best to contact the manufacturer, installer, or service provider directly. They can confirm whether the device relies on 3G and advise you on any necessary upgrades.

What You Should Do Now

If you discover that one of your devices is 3G-dependent, here’s how to prepare:

  1. Upgrade your device – Don’t wait until the last minute. If your device needs replacing, start planning now to avoid disruptions.
  2. Ask before you buy – Some devices may still use 3G for voice calls even if they claim to support 4G or 5G. Always check with the retailer or supplier before purchasing.
  3. Recycle responsibly – If you’re replacing a device, use the RE:MOBILE recycling programme. It ensures valuable materials are reused and keeps harmful components out of landfills.
  4. Be cautious buying second-hand, refurbished, or imported phones – These devices may not be fully compatible with New Zealand’s 4G or 5G networks, even if they appear to support them. To avoid issues, buy from trusted NZ-based retailers who can guarantee compatibility.

The 3G shutdown is part of New Zealand’s move toward faster, more reliable mobile networks. While it’s a positive step forward, it’s important to make sure you’re not caught off guard.
